Adela’s Country Eatery
In the Spotlight – Local Gem: Adela’s Country Eatery (Kaneohe, Oahu)
Handmade noodles crafted from Hawaii-grown taro, ulu, moringa, and more, paired with rich island-inspired sauces and thoughtful toppings. This hidden spot in Kaneohe elevates takeout with unbelievably fresh, flavorful, and imaginative dishes—served with a level of care, patience, and professionalism that turns a simple meal into something truly unforgettable.

Why Adela’s Country Eatery Is One of the Best Noodle Spots in Hawaii—Redefining the Definition of Noodle on a Global Stage
Tucked away on the windward side of Oahu, Hawaii, in the town of Kaneohe, Adela’s Country Eatery might not look like much at first glance—but it’s one of the most unforgettable food experiences we’ve ever had. A small, takeout-only eatery with no indoor seating, it welcomes you with the comforting scent of fresh noodles and pastries, and more importantly, a deep sense of warmth and hospitality.
What made our visit truly special wasn’t just the food (which was spectacular) but the kind soul who welcomed and served us. Her name was Millie, and to this day, we remember her kindness as clearly as we remember the taste of the noodles. She patiently guided us through the menu, explaining each unique dish, ingredient, and pairing with the kind of care you’d expect from a close friend—not a stranger.
Handmade Hawaiian Noodles, Rooted in Local Ingredients
If you’re searching for the best noodle shop in Oahu or wondering where to eat in Hawaii, Adela’s Country Eatery is a true gem. The concept is simple yet deeply meaningful: reduce Hawaii’s reliance on imported food by crafting noodles from Hawaii-grown crops, supporting local farmers, and showcasing the island’s agricultural abundance.
You begin by selecting your noodle base—each one handcrafted from a locally sourced ingredient: ‘ulu (breadfruit), malunggay (moringa), kalo (taro), avocado, sweet potato, or angel hair (capellini). Each offers its own taste and texture: taro is creamy and nutty, avocado is smooth and buttery, and breadfruit has a soft, earthy quality.
Then comes the fun part—building your dish. The sauce list is extensive and packed with flavor: alfredo, marinara, florentine, tomato cream, coconut cream, cacciatore, garlic butter, local style, curried, coconut curry cream, and their signature original moringa pasta sauce, a warm and comforting blend of tomato and onion.
Toppings range from fresh vegetables to hearty proteins, including portobello mushroom, eggplant, broccoli, mixed veggies, tofu (in teriyaki or garlic butter), teriyaki tofu, chicken breast, lechon, shrimp, braised short ribs, macadamia crusted fish, stuffed chicken breast, mixed seafood in lemongrass cream sauce, and smoked beef brisket.
We ordered three unforgettable dishes: malunggay pasta with smoked beef brisket, avocado pasta with macadamia crusted fish and mushrooms, and taro pasta with coconut cream and shrimp. Every bite was perfectly balanced—the noodles were al dente, the sauces rich and layered, and the toppings beautifully marinated and cooked to perfection. Even family members who usually avoid carbs couldn’t stop savoring each bite.
Kindness That Nourishes
Millie’s generosity and attention to detail left a lasting impression. She explained each unfamiliar ingredient with thoughtfulness. We learned that malunggay (moringa) is packed with iron, calcium, and vitamins A and C, known for its anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting benefits. She also told us about ‘ulu (breadfruit)—a traditional Hawaiian staple that’s naturally high in fiber and complex carbohydrates, with a subtly nutty flavor when turned into pasta.
It was a particularly hot day, and Millie, noticing this, offered us refreshing drinks—one with lilikoi and lychee, the other citrus-based—along with soft, jelly-like cakes from the pastry case. When we tried to pay, she kindly declined, encouraging us to stay hydrated and enjoy them.
Her thoughtfulness extended far beyond food. She noticed our damp hair and gently asked if we had just come from the beach. When we mentioned we needed to find somewhere to change out of our slightly wet clothes, she immediately offered the use of their private restroom behind the kitchen. She was concerned we might get sick from staying in damp clothing and wanted to make sure we were comfortable before continuing our day.
And just before we left, she surprised us once more—running to the back to pack a box of fresh, uncooked ‘ulu pasta so we could try cooking it later at our hotel in Waikiki. She gave us simple instructions and even suggested what toppings and sauces would pair well. It felt like a personal gift—offered without fanfare, just quiet sincerity. Adela’s Country Eatery is a woman- and minority-owned business redefining local dining in Hawaii. By using locally sourced ingredients, they support farmers and sustainability—serving up noodles with heart, purpose, and island pride.
Long after our visit, we still remember the flavors—but even more, we remember how it made us feel. This wasn’t just a takeout meal. It was an experience that nourished both body and spirit.
If you’re looking for a truly memorable food experience, don’t miss Adela’s Country Eatery in Hawaii. It’s one of the best places to eat on Oahu, especially for those seeking locally inspired dishes, Hawaiian-grown ingredients, and genuine hospitality. Whether you're a noodle lover, a sustainable food advocate, or just someone craving a delicious meal made with intention, Adela’s will leave a lasting impression.

Finely shaved ice with a snow-like texture, layered over creamy ice cream and topped with juicy real fruit, chewy mochi, and vibrant syrups made from actual tropical fruits—not artificial flavoring. This standout kiosk near the Royal Hawaiian Center redefines shave ice with its balanced, refreshing, and utterly addictive flavors. A true taste of Hawaii, crafted with quality and care that’s remained consistent for years.

Island Vintage Shave Ice – The Best Shave Ice in Waikiki, and Among the Finest in the World
If there’s one must-try dessert in Waikiki that truly captures the essence of Hawaii, it’s Island Vintage Shave Ice. Tucked along Kalakaua Avenue near the Royal Hawaiian Center, this charming kiosk offers a refined take on shave ice that’s refreshing, flavorful, and completely unforgettable. I still remember my first visit—it was my very first time trying shave ice, and from the moment I tasted it, I was hooked.
The texture alone was unlike anything I had experienced before. The ice was incredibly fine and delicate, almost like freshly fallen snow, and it absorbed the vibrant fruit syrups in the most delightful way. But what truly set it apart was the flavor. Unlike many other places that rely on artificially flavored syrups, Island Vintage uses real fruit-based syrups, which give each bite a natural, balanced sweetness that feels light and fresh rather than overly sugary. Every serving is thoughtfully layered with silky shave ice, creamy vanilla ice cream at the base, generous pieces of real fruit, and soft, chewy mochi on top. The combination of textures and flavors is deeply satisfying—cold, creamy, juicy, and just the right amount of chewy.
Over the years, I’ve tried shave ice in other parts of Hawaii and in cities around the world, but nothing compares to Island Vintage Shave Ice. The difference is unmistakable. Their commitment to quality, the use of authentic ingredients, and the perfect balance of flavor and texture make it a standout. No other shave ice I’ve tried comes close. When it comes to this Hawaiian specialty, Island Vintage truly has no equal.
I had the chance to return to Hawaii several years later. After arriving in Honolulu late at night, I made a point to visit Island Vintage Shave Ice the very next morning. I had been dreaming about it for ages, and I was thrilled to find that nothing had changed. The flavor was just as vibrant, the ingredients just as fresh, and the experience just as special as I remembered. It was like being reunited with a longtime favorite—familiar, comforting, and still utterly delicious.
My favorite flavor is the Heavenly Lilikoi, a refreshing combination of passion fruit, sliced fresh strawberries, frozen yogurt layered beneath the shave ice, and a topping of popping boba and mochi. It’s the perfect balance of tangy, creamy, juicy, and chewy—bursting with tropical brightness and satisfying textures. Among all the flavors I’ve tried, Heavenly Lilikoi is the one I keep coming back to.
The shave ice kiosk is located at Kiosk B-1 on Kalakaua Avenue, just steps from the entrance of the Royal Hawaiian Center. Though the space is small, the quality of what they serve is exceptional. For those looking for more than shave ice, Island Vintage also operates a café on the top floor of the Royal Hawaiian Center. There, you’ll find a broader menu that includes açai bowls, specialty drinks, and delicious local breakfast and all-day options. One of my personal favorites is their wild crab and omelet breakfast, which is both fresh and satisfying. Their frozen Kona coffee drinks are also excellent—I especially enjoy the Vintage Kona Mocha and the Coconut Kona Mocha for their rich yet refreshing flavor.
That said, no matter how tempting the other offerings may be, the shave ice remains the true star. It’s the highlight of every visit to Waikiki, and a treat I look forward to long before my plane even lands.
If you’re searching for the best shave ice in Honolulu, Island Vintage Shave Ice – Royal Hawaiian is a destination not to miss. It’s more than just a dessert—it’s a flavorful tradition made with care, quality, and a deep appreciation for the taste of the islands. Once you try it, you’ll understand why no other shave ice quite measures up.
